Overview

JUJU Dining is a modern Japanese dining space located in South Brisbane, where Oni Joinery delivered a bold and highly detailed joinery package. Central to the aesthetic is the use of Shou Sugi Ban, a traditional Japanese technique that involves charring timber to create a deep blackened surface with striking texture.

This method not only enhances the visual drama of the space but also adds durability and a natural resistance to fire and insects. Combined with custom banquette seating, curved reception counters, and patterned acoustic walls, the joinery package creates a cohesive and elevated hospitality interior.

A dark, smoky grain runs through the Shou Sugi Ban timber, anchoring the interior with drama and depth.

Project Scope

The client required a full suite of custom joinery that would bring warmth, texture, and contrast to the space. The goal was to evoke traditional Japanese craftsmanship while embracing contemporary edge through bold materiality. The joinery needed to align with the brand’s identity and support practical use across multiple high-traffic hospitality zones.

The POS counter showcases light-toned timber joinery with clean lines, offering a warm and welcoming impression.

Our Approach

Oni Joinery used Shou Sugi Ban (charred timber) extensively throughout the venue, applying it to wall cladding, cabinetry, and custom furniture for a cohesive tone and mood. The technique’s smoky black finish created the foundation for a rich, textural palette.

Contrasting elements like natural oak, light marble, and gold accents were integrated to balance the dark timber and elevate the overall aesthetic. All joinery was crafted with long-term durability, precise tolerances, and acoustic performance in mind, ensuring both form and function.
